International Course on Infrared Spectroscopy.

6-8 July 2009
Staff: Prof. Dr. J.H. van der Maas (VibSpec), Dr. T. Visser (Utrecht University), Ing. F. Soulimani (Utrecht University) and Drs. P. de Peinder (VibSpec).

Infrared spectroscopy (NIR, MIR, FIR) is among the most widely used and powerful identification and structural tools of today's chemist. The scientist, working in the field of organic and inorganic chemistry, biological products, polymers, catalysis, environmental pollution, pharmaceuticals, quality control, etc., must have an up-to-date working knowledge of the principals and applications of this type of spectroscopy.
From 1965 until now over 1000 people from industry, academia and the public sector followed the International Infrared Course.

The primary aim of the course is to familiarise participants with the capabilities and limitations of infrared spectroscopy, and to discuss how this technique can be successfully applied. The course has proved to be beneficial to both, starters as well as spectroscopists with experience.

The course includes plenary lectures on:

- theory (vibrations, frequencies and intensities, selection rules, molecular interactions, ...)
- instrumentation (spectrometers and accessories)
- sampling techniques (transmission, internal and specular reflection, ...)
- quantitative analysis (Beer's law, single- and multi-component, PCR, ...)
- data manipulation (noise reduction, resolution enhancement, FSD, search, libraries, ...)
- spectrum interpretation (organic & inorganic)

The lectures are interspersed with practical sessions for small groups illustrating instrument operation & control and various accessories and sampling techniques.

In addition, there will be ample time for informal discussions, and participants are encouraged to consult the staff on problems of particular interest.
The course language is English, but other languages may be used in smaller groups and for personal discussions.
No previous experience with infrared is required but some background in chemistry is assumed.

A variety of spectrometers and accessories will be available for use as hands-on instruction. State-of-the-art equipment is kindly supplied by the instrument companies.

The registration fee for this course is € 1.350,- free from taxes (VAT / BTW). The fee includes all tuition, course lecture notes, lunches, refreshments and a Course Dinner on Tuesday 7th of July. The course will be held at the Utrecht University Science Park ("De Uithof"). PhD students recieve a reduction of 30% on the course fee.

Course co-ordination:

Drs. Peter de Peinder

Timetable:
Monday - Wednesday 9.00-16.30 h, with breaks for coffee/tea and lunches.
A course dinner is held Tuesday night at 18:00.
